Q&A with Jan Kruger

Canon, Nikon or Sony?
“Canon.”

What came first, sport or photography?
“Sport. Growing up in South Africa, sport was very much part of daily life. Playing competitive sport until my early 20’s I learnt the values of dedication and commitment to achieving goals. My dad was an avid photographer, and from an early age I was fascinated by the idea of capturing a moment to last forever. I feel like a very lucky man making my living by combining two passions.”

One change for the better to improve football photography for the next generation of photographers?
“Open up access to non league and lower league matches to develop skills. Maybe develop a ‘FPA Young Photographer’ membership, and arrange for these members to gain access on showing membership card.”

Do you have a favourite memory or anecdote from your time as a football photographer?
“2016 UEFA Euro Champs in France, and 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Working on the biggest stage, combined with travel to fascinating countries is in my opinion the biggest perk of my job! The passion of the fans, skill of the players and dedication of my fellow media never cease to amaze me.”

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?
“Chef, or anything where I can think creatively.”

First football match photographed?
“Charlton v Crystal Palace. Setting up before the match I realised I forgot to pack my card reader. Luckily for me I sat next to Avril Husband, and she kindly shared her card reader with me. I always make sure I give her a big hug when I see her.”

Favourite footballer to work with?
“They are all brilliant…”

Favourite football ground to work at, and why?
“Goodison Park! Old school seating around the pitch close enough to intimidate any away team, passionate fans and best media meal!”

Biggest Lesson Learnt in the business?
“Always look at your background first and be patient!”
