Q&A with Andrew Yates

Canon, Nikon or Sony?
“Sony camera system.”

What came first, sport or photography?
“Bit of both, to be honest. I played football all through school along with most other sports.”

First football match photographed?
“I can’t remember the year, but it was definitely at Manchester United, and Mark Robins scored!”

Best footballer to work with?
“He wasn’t a footballer at the time, but it would have to be Brian Horton. He was the Manchester City Manager between 1993-95 and was a dream to work with. In my days as a staff photographer at the Manchester Evening News I was working with Manchester City in some way most of the days.”

Favourite football ground to work at, and why?
“For atmosphere it has to be St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United.”

Biggest lesson learnt in the business?
“Biggest lesson was learnt early and it was how to shoot a football match on four rolls of film, which is basically 144 frames! Also, always be nice to people, you never know when you might need help.”
